Uogashi fish market in Nihonbashi circa 1910

This market, built during the Edo period in Nihonbashi near the famed bridge, was the predecessor to today's Tsukiji fish market. The Great Kantō earthquake of 1923 and resultant fires destroyed it, and in the citywide reconstruction following the disaster, the market was moved to Tsukiji, where it reopened in 1935.

As you know, the market will once again relocate later this year, this time from Tsukiji to Toyosu, about 2.5 kilometers to the southeast. But about 60 wholesalers will stay behind. Indeed, a new, much smaller market will be opening in Tsukiji. This new market's name will be "Tsukiji Uogashi" (uogashi literally meaning "fish quay") - a name meant as an homage to the market's roots.
